Ejercicios de Condicionales en Inglés Nivel C1: Inversión y Estructuras Avanzadas

Los cuatro condicionales (zero, first, second, third) son la base. Pero si tu objetivo es el C1 Advanced de Cambridge, un IELTS de Band 7 o simplemente poder producir inglés que suene realmente sofisticado, hay un conjunto de estructuras adicionales que debes conocer.

No son raras ni artificiales. Las encontrarás en periódicos serios, en literatura inglesa, en documentos legales y en cualquier contexto donde el inglés escrito tenga que demostrar precisión y registro.

1. La inversión condicional

Es la estructura que más diferencia el inglés avanzado del intermedio en términos de condicionales. Consiste en omitir "if" e invertir el auxiliar y el sujeto.

Con "had" (Third conditional):

• If I had known → Had I known, I would have acted differently.
• If she had arrived earlier → Had she arrived earlier, she would have met him.
• If they had invested more → Had they invested more, the project might have succeeded.

Con "were" (Second conditional):

• If it were possible → Were it possible, I would do it immediately.
• If he were here → Were he here, he would agree with me.
• If I were you → Were I you, I would reconsider. (Muy formal).

Con "should" (First conditional, acción posible pero con tono formal):

• If you should have any questions → Should you have any questions, please contact us.
• If the situation should change → Should the situation change, we will notify you.

Esta última forma es muy frecuente en emails corporativos y documentos legales formales. La reconocerás mucho en correspondencia profesional de nivel alto.

2. Mixed conditionals

Los mixed conditionals combinan elementos de dos condicionales diferentes. Los más comunes:

Second + Third (situación pasada, consecuencia presente):

• If I had taken that job (third: pasado que no ocurrió), I would be living in Berlin now (second: consecuencia en el presente).
• If she hadn't married him, she wouldn't be so unhappy now.
• If we had invested in that property, we would be millionaires today.

Third + Second (condición presente irreal, consecuencia pasada irreal):

• If I were more disciplined (second: situación presente irreal), I would have finished this months ago (third: consecuencia pasada).
• If she weren't so stubborn, she would have accepted the help.

Los mixed conditionals son más complejos de producir porque requieren mezclar conscientemente los tiempos, pero reconocerlos es fundamental para entender textos avanzados.

3. Estructuras formales equivalentes

"But for" / "Were it not for" / "Had it not been for":

Estas tres construcciones equivalen a "if it weren't for" o "if it hadn't been for":

• But for your support, I would never have finished. (Si no hubiera sido por tu apoyo...).
• Were it not for the rain, we would have had a perfect day. (Si no fuera por la lluvia...).
• Had it not been for the last-minute deal, the company would have gone bankrupt. (Si no hubiera sido por...).

"But for" puede ir con second o third conditional según el tiempo:

• But for his experience, he couldn't handle this. (Second: presente).
• But for her intervention, the project would have failed. (Third: pasado).

"Assuming that" / "Supposing that" / "Given that":

Alternativas más sofisticadas a "if":

• Assuming the budget is approved, we can start in March.
• Supposing she changes her mind, what would we do?
• Given that the data is correct, the conclusion follows naturally.

4. Condicionales con "otherwise" y "or else"

Estas palabras introducen la consecuencia negativa de no cumplir la condición. Son equivalentes a un first conditional negativo, pero sin la cláusula con "if":

• Study harder. Otherwise, you'll fail. (= If you don't study harder, you'll fail).
• Confirm your booking, or else it will be cancelled. (= If you don't confirm...)
• She needs to communicate more; otherwise, the team will struggle.

Ejercicios C1

Transforma usando inversión condicional:

1. If the report had been submitted on time, we wouldn't have lost the client. → Had ___________________

2. If you need any further information, do not hesitate to contact us. → Should ___________________

3. If it were not for the funding, the project would collapse. → Were ___________________

Respuestas:

1. Had the report been submitted on time, we wouldn't have lost the client.
2. Should you need any further information, do not hesitate to contact us.
3. Were it not for the funding, the project would collapse.

Identifica si es mixed conditional y qué tipo:

1. If he had studied medicine, he would be a doctor now.
2. If she weren't so impatient, she would have got the promotion.
3. If they had built the factory here, there would be more jobs today.

Respuestas:

1. Third + Second: condición pasada (no estudió medicina), consecuencia presente (no es médico).
2. Second + Third: condición presente (es impaciente), consecuencia pasada (no obtuvo el ascenso).
3. Third + Second: condición pasada (no construyeron la fábrica), consecuencia presente (no hay empleos).

Reescribe con "but for":

1. If it hadn't been for the last bus, we would have been stranded. → ___________________

2. If it weren't for her contacts in the industry, she wouldn't have the clients she has. → ___________________

Respuestas:

1. But for the last bus, we would have been stranded.
2. But for her contacts in the industry, she wouldn't have the clients she has.

En el examen C1 Advanced

Estas estructuras aparecen principalmente en:

• Use of English Part 4 (Key Word Transformation): te pedirán transformar frases usando "had", "were", "but for" o "should" para mantener el significado original.
• Writing Part 2: en propuestas o informes formales, la inversión condicional y "but for" elevan el nivel de sofisticación.
• Reading: reconocer estas estructuras es imprescindible para entender textos académicos y periodísticos avanzados.
