El verbo GET es, sin exageración, el más productivo del inglés. Tiene decenas de significados por sí solo (obtener, llegar, volverse, entender...) y con partículas forma una cantidad enorme de phrasal verbs, cada uno con su propio matiz.
La buena noticia: una vez que entiendes la lógica de cada partícula con GET, los significados dejan de parecer arbitrarios. Esta guía cubre más de 40 phrasal verbs con GET, organizados por sentido y con ejemplos reales.
La Lógica de GET: ¿Cómo Funciona?
Antes de ver la lista, conviene entender los significados base de GET:
- Obtener / Conseguir: Get a job, get the answer
- Llegar / Ir a un lugar: Get home, get to the airport
- Volverse / Convertirse: Get tired, get angry
- Entender: I don't get it
- Hacer que algo suceda: Get the car fixed
Con cada partícula, estos significados se modulan y combinan de formas específicas. Vamos a verlas.
GET + UP (Movimiento hacia arriba / inicio del día)

GET + ON (Progreso, relación, subir)

Truco: Get over it es una expresión muy habitual en inglés informal para decirle a alguien que supere algo y siga adelante.
GET + AWAY (Escapar, vacaciones)

Nota: Get along y get on son prácticamente sinónimos en el sentido de "llevarse bien con alguien". Los americanos prefieren get along; los británicos, get on.

Diferencias que Confunden: GET ON vs GET ALONG vs GET BY
Estas tres expresiones tienen significados distintos pero se confunden con frecuencia:
- Get on (with someone) = llevarse bien → I get on really well with Sarah.
- Get along (with someone) = llevarse bien (sinónimo, más americano) → They don't get along at all.
- Get by = sobrevivir / apañárselas con lo mínimo → My English is enough to get by.
GET en el Examen Cambridge (B2/C1)
En el Use of English del FCE y el CAE, los phrasal verbs con GET aparecen con frecuencia en:
- Key Word Transformation: "She recovered from the illness." → "She got over the illness."
- Open Cloze: "I finally got ______ to replying to his email." → around
- Word Formation: Conocer el sustantivo getaway o adjetivo outgoing
Los examinadores valoran el uso preciso de phrasal verbs como evidencia de competencia lingüística avanzada. Usarlos correctamente en el Speaking también suma puntos en el criterio de lexical resource.
