El verbo PUT en inglés significa básicamente "colocar, poner". Pero cuando lo combinas con diferentes partículas, su significado se transforma radicalmente. Put off no tiene nada que ver con poner algo; put up with tampoco.

La Lógica de PUT
El significado base de PUT es "colocar algo en un lugar". Esta idea de movimiento y posición influye en muchos de sus phrasal verbs, aunque de forma metafórica:
- Put away = colocar en su sitio (guardar)
- Put down = colocar hacia abajo (dejar, apuntar, humillar)
- Put up = colocar hacia arriba (colgar, alojar, aguantar... metafórico)
- Put off = colocar "fuera" del momento presente (posponer)
Entender esta metáfora espacial te ayudará a recordar los significados con más facilidad.
PUT OFF: El Más Importante
PUT OFF es, sin duda, el phrasal verb con PUT más frecuente. Tiene tres usos principales:
1. Posponer / Aplazar
Significado: Mover algo "hacia fuera" del tiempo presente.
- Don't put off what you can do today. (No dejes para mañana lo que puedes hacer hoy.)
- The meeting was put off until next week. (La reunión fue aplazada hasta la semana que viene.)
- She keeps putting off the dentist appointment. (Sigue aplazando la cita con el dentista.)
2. Desanimar / Quitar las ganas de algo
Significado: Hacer que alguien pierda interés o entusiasmo.
- The long queue put me off going to the concert. (La cola larga me quitó las ganas de ir al concierto.)
- His attitude really puts me off. (Su actitud me echa para atrás.)
- Don't let the price put you off—it's worth it. (No dejes que el precio te disuada.)
3. Distraer a alguien
Significado: Interrumpir la concentración de alguien.
- Stop talking—you're putting me off. (Deja de hablar, me estás distrayendo.)
- The noise put him off during the exam. (El ruido lo distrajo durante el examen.)
PUT UP: Múltiples Significados
PUT UP tiene varios usos muy diferentes que conviene aprender por separado:

PUT UP WITH: El Three-Word Phrasal Verb
Significado: Aguantar, soportar algo o a alguien.
- I can't put up with this noise anymore. (No puedo aguantar este ruido más.)
- She puts up with a lot from her boss. (Aguanta mucho de parte de su jefe.)
- How do you put up with him? (¿Cómo aguantas estar con él?)

PUT ON: Ponerse, Añadir, Fingir

Frase idiomática: Put on a brave face = aparentar que todo está bien cuando en realidad no lo está.
PUT DOWN: Dejar, Criticar, Sacrificar

Significado: Colocar algo en el lugar donde debe estar; también en sentido figurado "encarcelar".

- We need to put forward a solution by Monday. (Tenemos que presentar una solución para el lunes.)
En el contexto de los relojes: Put the clocks forward = adelantar los relojes (cambio de hora en primavera).
PUT BACK: Devolver, Retrasar

Los phrasal verbs con PUT son especialmente complejos porque un mismo verbo puede tener significados completamente diferentes según la partícula. La mejor estrategia es aprenderlos en grupos por partícula y siempre con un ejemplo de contexto real.
