- First conditional → predicciones concretas y consecuencias probables.
- Second conditional → hipótesis, propuestas, sugerencias diplomáticas.
- Third conditional → análisis del pasado, reflexión histórica, causas y consecuencias.
- Zero conditional → definiciones, procesos, hechos establecidos.
- If the government increases investment in renewable energy, carbon emissions will fall significantly within the next decade.
- If we fail to address plastic pollution now, future generations will inherit a severely degraded environment.
Para proponer hipótesis:
- If more companies offered flexible working arrangements, employee productivity would likely improve.
- If public transport were free, many commuters would leave their cars at home.
Para analizar causas del pasado:
- If stricter regulations had been in place, the financial crisis of 2008 might have been avoided.
- The epidemic would have spread more slowly if early warning systems had been more effective.
Para introducir contraargumentos:
- Even if this approach were adopted immediately, the results would not be visible for several years.
- If opponents of this policy were correct, we would already be seeing the predicted negative effects.
Emails formales
Peticiones suavizadas (second conditional):
- I would be grateful if you could send me the updated report by the end of the week.
- It would be very helpful if you were able to attend the meeting in person.
- If you could provide some clarification on this matter, I would greatly appreciate it.
Condiciones y acuerdos:
- If the terms are acceptable to your team, we would be delighted to move forward.
- We will proceed with the booking provided that we receive written confirmation.
Cierre formal con inversión condicional:
- Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
- Should you have any concerns regarding the above, I am happy to discuss them at your convenience.
Esta última forma ("should + sujeto + infinitivo" como alternativa a "if") es muy frecuente en correspondencia corporativa formal y demuestra dominio del registro.
Propuestas e informes
- If the company were to implement a mentoring programme, junior employees would develop faster and staff retention rates would improve.
- If we allocated 15% of the marketing budget to social media, our reach among 18-35 year-olds would increase substantially.
Proyecciones con first conditional:
- If the pilot scheme proves successful, we will roll it out across all departments by Q3.
- If customer feedback is positive, the product launch will proceed as planned.
Análisis histórico y lecciones aprendidas:
- Had the previous campaign targeted a younger demographic, the results would have been more promising.
- If the initial budget had been adequate, the project would not have been delayed.
Cartas formales y de reclamación
Condicionar la resolución de un problema:
- If this issue is not resolved within ten working days, I will have no choice but to escalate the matter.
- Should the product arrive damaged again, I would expect a full refund.
Proponer soluciones:
- If a replacement were sent promptly, I would be willing to continue as a customer.
Cuatro frases para empezar argumentos con condicionales
Guárdalas y adáptalas:
- If we consider the long-term implications of this policy, it becomes clear that...
- Were the proposed changes to be implemented, the impact on the sector would be significant.
- If one examines the evidence carefully, there are strong grounds to suggest that...
- Had decision-makers acted sooner, the situation today would be fundamentally different.
- Send me the contract soon. → (email formal, petición suave)
- If you don't fix this problem, I'll complain. → (carta de reclamación, tono formal)
- We didn't invest then, so we don't have money now. → (informe, third + second conditional)
Posibles respuestas:
- I would be grateful if you could send me the contract at your earliest convenience.
- Should this issue remain unresolved, I will be compelled to escalate the matter formally.
- Had we invested at that time, we would now be in a considerably stronger financial position.
